Abstract. Purpose:To compare 20-guage(20G)with 25-guage(25G)vitrectomy for macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 12 eyes of 12 patients who received surgery during the past 3 years and who were followed up for 3 months or longer. The series comprised 6 males and 6 females. The age ranged from 56 to 77 years, average 67 years. Randomly selected 6 eyes received 20G vitrectomy with pars plana lensectomy. The other 6 eyes received 25G vitrectomy with phacoemulsification-aspiration. Intraocular lens was implanted in all the eyes. Results:There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding improvement of visual acuity, outcome of macular edema, or duration between surgery and best visual acuity. Transient ocular hypertension developed in 4 eyes of 20G group. Conclusion:No complication occurred after 25G vitrectomy. There was no difference between 20G and 25G vitrectomy regarding surgical results.
