Abstract. Purpose:To report five cases who showed spontaneous separation of epiretinal membrane. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 5 eyes of 5 patients. The series comprised 1 male and 4 females. Their age ranged from 51 to 62 years, average 57 years. Anteroposterior vitreal traction was initially present in 2 eyes. One eye showed complete detachment of posterior vitreous membrane. Foveal thickness, when measured by an optical coherence tomography(OCT), averaged 273.3+79.2μm. Corrected visual acuity ranged from 0.4 to 1.2. Clinical Course:The epiretinal membrane disappeared spontaneously in all the 5 eyes after 6 to 35 months, average 19 months with visual acuity ranging from 0.5 to 1.2. Foveal thickness averaged 183.4±15.9μm. Disappearance of epiretinal membrane was secondary to posterior vitreous detachment. Conclusion:Epiretinal membrane may spontaneously disappear in eyes without posterior vitreous membrane. This possibility has to be kept in mind in planning therapeutic alternatives.
