Abstract. Purpose:To report the long-term outcome of intravitrealy injected triamcinolone acetonide for branch retinal vein occlusion in phakic eyes. Cases and Method:This prospective study was made on 19 eyes of 19 cases of branch retinal vein occlusion. The age ranged from 38 to 80 years, average 64 years. By inclusion criteria, best corrected visual acuity ranged from 0.1 to 0.5 and the foveal thickness was 250μm or over. Each eye received a single intravitreal injection of 4mg triamcinolone acetonide. Results:After follow-up for 6 to 27 months, average 14 months, intraocular pressure(IOP)rose to 21mmHg or over in 5 eyes(26%). IOP was controlled by topical and systemic medication. Four eyes needed another session of treatment for increased cystoid macular edema. Foveal thickness was significantly correlated with age, visual acuity and duration of intravitreal mass of triamcinolone(p<0.05). Conclusion:Intravitreal injection of triamcinolone was safe and effective for branch retinal vein occlusion for a prolonged period. Observation of intravitreal triamcinolone was easy and useful to evaluate the pharmacodynamics.
