  • Look Inside

Ten eyes of retinal vein occlusion received intravitreal injection of 40,000 units of tissue plasminogen activator(t-PA). Cystoid macular edema was present in all the eyes. The series comprised 6 eyes of branch retinal vein occlusion(BRVO)and 4 eyes of central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO). The logMAR visual acuity averaged 1.12 before treatment,1.08 on day 1,0.94 on day 2,0.84 on day 10,and 0.83 one month after treatment. It improved significantly after day 10(p<0.01). The logMAR visual acuity improved by 0.2 or more in 6 eyes(60%). They comprised 2 eyes(50%)of CRVO and 4 eyes(67%)of BRVO. The foveal thickness averaged 743μm before treatment,612μm on day 1,466μm on day 2,323μm on day 10,and 342μm one month after treatment. It significantly improved after day 2(p<0.01). There was no complication throughout. The findings show that intravitreal injection of t-PA may be effective for cystoid macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion.
