Abstract. Purpose:To report the relation between serum IgE level and incidence of complications after LASIK. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 250 eyes of 250 cases who were randomly selected from patients who received LASIK during the past 6 years. The right eyes were evaluated throughout. The 250 cases were divided into two groups:96 cases who had 170IU/ml or more as serum IgE, and 154 cases who had IgE below this level. Results:Diffuse lamellar keratitis developed in 7 out of 250 eyes(2.8%). It occurred in 6 eyes(6.3%)in cases with higher IgE level and in one eye(0.7%)in those with lower IgE level. The difference was significant(p=0.0139). Corneal striae developed in 6 out of 250 eyes(2.4%). There was no significant difference in the incidence between the two groups. No eye developed epithelial ingrowth in the whole series. Conclusion:There is a possibility that serum IgE level is related with the incidence of complications after LASIK and that serum IgE level may serve as a prognostic factor for post-LASIK complications.
