Purpose:To evaluate the effect of subtenon injection of 20mg triamcinolone acetonide for macular edema. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 27 eyes of macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy 20 eyes and branch retinal vein occlusion 7 eyes. Results:The log MAR visual acuity averaged 0.74 before treatment and its peak value averaged 0.5 after treatment. Improvement in visual acuity was significantly better in eyes with duration of macular edema was less than 6months than those longer than 6months(p=0.0205). Improvement in visual acuity was independent of causative disease, type of edema, presence or absence of posterior vitrous detachment,or history of vitreous surgery. Conclusion:Subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide is effective for macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy or branch retinal vein occlusion, particularly when macular edema has persisted for less than 6months.
