Purpose:To evaluate trans-tenon retrobulbar injection of triamcinolone for macular edema. Cases and Method:This retrospective study involved 38 eyes of 33 patients who received 20mg of triamcinolone acetonide. The series comprised diabetic retinopathy 22 eyes, branch retinal vein occlusion(BRVO)9 eyes, and central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO)7 eyes. All the cases were followed up for one month or longer. Visual acuity was evaluated in terms of logMAR. Results:In diabetic eyes, visual acuity improved in 5 eyes(23%), remained unchanged in 14 eyes(64%), and deteriorated in 3 eyes(14%). In BRVO, it improved in 3 eyes(33%), remained unchanged in 5 eyes(56%), and deteriorated in 1 eye(11%). In CRVO, it improved in 5 eyes(71%)and remained unchanged in 2 eyes(29%). There was no significant changes in foveal thickness before and 3 months after injection. Intraocular pressure temporarily increased in 3 eyes. Conclusion:This therapeutic modality is recommended for macular edema because of its ease and safety.
