Abstract. We performed indocyanine green video angiography on 39 eyes following scleral encircling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Pulsation of vortex vein at the ampulla was present in 20 eyes. The pulsating ampulla was located in the superior temporal quadrant in 11 eyes,of which the location coincided with that of retinal break in 9 eyes. In 3 eyes, pulsating ampulla was present in three quadrants. These 3 eyes had multiple lesions in deeper retinal layer. In these 3 eyes, choroidal veins served by pulsating vortex veins were constricted and showed less intense fluorescence. These findings disappeared in 2 eyes following removal of scleral buckle. It is concluded that scleral buckling procedure induces morphological and functional changes in choroidal circulation. Retinal lesions may develop in eyes with pulsating vortex vein in multiple quadrants.
