Abstract. We evaluated the sensitivity to antibiotics of bacteria isolated from eye discharges. Samples were obtained from 338 patients staying in a general hospital. Their ages averaged 80.2 years in males and 83.9 years in females. There were 130 strains of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus aureus(CNS). Their rate of resistance was 30% for cefmenoxime or chloramphenicol and 63% for ofloxacin. There were 111 strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA).Their rate of resistance was nil for vancomycin,6.3% for chloramphenicol, and 25.2% for oxytetracycline. The rate of resistance of gram-positive bacteria as a whole was 35.4% for cefmenoxime,18.1% for chloramphenicol, and 60.4% for ofloxacin. That of gram-negative bacteria was 28.9% for cefmenoxime,50.5% for chloramphenicol, and 19.6% for ofloxacin. The findings show that cefmenoxime and chloramphenicol are indicated for presurgical use as are more effective for gram-positive bacteria that are common in the conjunctigal sac.
