Abstract. Purpose:To compare the effect of gel-forming timolol solution switched from aqueous timolol. Cases and Method:This study was made on 103 eyes of 103 patients who were using 0.5% aqueous timolol for glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The ages ranged from 33 to 84 years, average 66 years. They were given 0.5% gel-forming timolol solution as substitute for aqueous timolol. Intraocular pressure(IOP)was measured once a month for 3 months. They were then asked about the subjective evaluation and preferences. Results:IOP averaged 16.6±2.6mmHg before and 15.7 to 15.9mmHg after switching. The difference was significant(p<0.0001). Irritability was reported during use of aqueous timolol and stickiness and irritable feeling during gel-forming timolol. Aqueous timolol was preferred by 11 and gel-forming timolol by 62 patients. Conclusion:Gel-forming timolol solution has hypotensive effect similar to aqueous timolol. Many patients prefer the former due to its convenience.
