  • Look Inside

A seven-year-old girl presented with swelling of right eyelid since one month before. Her corrected visual acuity was 0.04 right and 1.2 left. The right eye protruded laterally. A tumor was palpated upper nasal to the eyeball. Funduscopy showed swollen optic disc and dilated retinal vessels. Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed a tumor superior to the muscle cone in the right orbit. It was excised under the tentative diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. It was 40mm×30mm×25mm in size and was multinodular and soft. Immunohistochemically,it was positive for ectodermal, mesenchymal and neural markers, suggesting undifferentiated malignant tumor of neural origin. The tumor recurred 3 weeks after surgery. Chemotherapy and irradiation led to cure with visual acuity of 1.0. Further histological studies established the diagnosis of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor(pNET). To the best of our knowledge, only nine case have been reported of this tumor originating in the orbit.
