We reviewed 6 eyes of 6 cases that developed acute endophthalmitis following intraocular lens implantation(IOL). The interval between cataract surgery and endophthalmitis ranged from 2 to 7 days. All the cases were surgically treated within 6 hours after diagnosis of endophthalmitis. The IOL was removed in all the 6 eyes. Vitrectomy was performed on 5 eyes without adding antibiotics to perfusing fluid. The visual acuity immediately before vitrectomy was hand motion in 5 eyes. The final visual acuity was 1.0 or better in 5 eyes. Causative microorganism was identified in 2 eyes. There was no recurrence of inflammation throughout. The findings show that early vitrectomy is effective for endophthalmitis following IOL implantation.
