Purpose:To evaluate the surface property of two types of tubes used for nasolacrimal duct obstruction in adults. Material and methods:Six female patients in the sixth decade were treated by retention of tubes for nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Three patients received a heparin-coated polyurethane tube. The other three received a silicone tube. The tubes were removed one month later and were examined by a scanning electron microscope(SEM). Results:All the six cases showed improvement in lacrimation and eye discharge after treatment. There was no difference in the effect between the two groups. When examined by SEM,heparin-coated polyurethane tube showed a smoother surface. Conclusion:Heparin-coated polyurethane tube is expected to show lesser biofilm formation resulting in better clinical effect and lesser granulation after prolonged retention.
