We evaluated 112 eyes of 112 patients of open-angle glaucoma regarding visual field and retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)thickness. Their ages ranged from 20 to 80 years, average 55 years. All the eyes had visual acuity of 0.8 or better. Visual field was measured by Humphery Field Analyzer. RNFL thickness was measured by GDxVCC,a commercially available scanning laser polarimeter. Another series of 21 eyes of 21 healthy persons served as control. Findings by the two methods were congruous in 93 glaucoma eyes(83%). In 13 out of the remaining 19 eyes(68%),GDxVCC showed advanced RNFL thinning in the nasal sector of perimetrically unaffected quadrants. There was no difference in RNFL thickness between the superior and inferior hemisphere in the other 6 eyes(32%). The findings show that RNFL thinning may be detected by GDxVCC in fundus areas with apparently normal perimetric findings.
