Purpose:To set the upper limit of ultrasound output during phacoemulsification and aspiration(PEA). Cases and Method:PEA was performed on 99 eyes. In 64 eyes, the ultrasound output during the first chop was set as the maximum during the whole surgical procedure. The other 35 eyes received 60% of the value as the maximum. Findings:In the first group, ultrasound had to be applied longer and at lesser power output level. The food pedal had to be activated less often. There was no difference in the duration of surgery or in total ultrasound energy. Conclusion:Limiting the ultrasound power output was useful in preventing excess ultrasound activation and in allowing less frequent foot pedal control.
