We measured the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL). We used an optical coherence tomography(OCT 3000)and a scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensator(GDxVCC). The RNFL thickness was measured around the optic disc in 52 eyes of 26 healthy volunteers and 31 eyes of 16glaucoma patients. In healthy eyes, the values averaged 97.3μm by OCT and 56.78μm by GDx. In glaucomatous eyes, the values averaged 64.2μm by OCT and 44.82μm by GDx. For all parameters,OCT showed significantly higher values for RNFL thickness than GDx. Coefficients of variation for the total average in healthy and glaucomatous eyes were 5.5%and 9.4%with OCT and 2.8%and 3.7%with GDx. Measurement by GDx showed a significantly better reproducibility than OCT.
