Purpose:To report the retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)thickness in diabetic eyes. Cases and Method:This study involved 173 eyes of diabetics. The stage of diabetic retinopathy(DR)was:no diabetic retinopathy(NDR)69 eyes,simple(SDR)62 eyes,preproliferative(PPDR)24 eyes, and proliferative(PDR)18 eyes. We used GDx Access for 95 eyes and GDx VCC in 78 eyes. Results:RNFL thickness by GDx Access increased in NDR,SDR,PPDR and PDR in the ascending order. Significant differences were present between NDR and PPDR,NDR and PDR,and SDR and PDR respectively. Values for Superior Max showed significant differences between NDR and PPDR,and SDR and PPDR. Values for Symmetry showed significant differences between NDR and PPDR,NDR and PDR,PDR and PPDR,and PPDR and SDR. Inter-eye symmetry by DGx VCC showed significant differences between NDR and PPDR,NDR and PDR,SDR and PDR,and SDR and PPDR. Nerve fiber indicator showed significant differences between SDR and PPDR,and NDR and PPDR. Conclusion:RNFL thickness in diabetes changes dependent on the stage of retinopathy. RNFL is most attenuated in preproliferative retinopathy. Attenuation may be variable in different peripapillary sectors.
