Purpose:To evaluate triamcinolone injection into the anterior chamber during cataract surgery regarding postoperative inflammation and complications. Cases and Method:This prospective study involved 54 eyes of 27 patients who received bilateral cataract surgery. The series comprised 11 otherwise healthy persons and 16 diabetics. Each patient received triamcinolone injection into the anterior chamber in one eye and biological saline solution(BSS)in the fellow eye. Patients were followed up for 3 months after surgery. Results:Intensity of aqueous flare one week after surgery was significantly lower in triamcinolone-treated eye than in the fellow eye in diabetic patients. There were no differences between the two groups regarding postoperative visual acuity, intraocular pressure, loss of corneal endothelial cells,or thickness of the fovea. Conclusion:Injection of triamcinolone into the anterior chamber during surgery may lessen inflammation during early postoperative period in diabetics.
