Abstract. Purpose:To quantitate total wavefront aberrations in normal eyes. Cases and Method:A total of 115 eyes of 90 normal persons were evaluated for total refraction by a wavefront analyzer. They were free of eye disorders except anomalous refraction. The data were evolved into Zernike polinomials. Evaluated were:wavefront aberration, refraction, and values at the pupil diameter of 5 mm and 7 mm. Results:The total aberration was composed of 85.8% second-order,8.1% of third-order,4.4% of fourth-order,and 1.7% of fifth-order one. There was no correlation between refraction and higher-order aberrations(Spearman rank correlation coefficient:r=0.042,p=0.742). The aberrations were significantly greater at the pupil size of 7 mm than 5 mm(Wilcoxon signed rank test:p<0.01). Conclusion:Higher-order wavefront aberrations did not correlate with refraction. They increased in larger pupils.
