  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We have studied evoked EMG on the tibial nerves in 31 cases of SMON with a proven history of chinoform administration, and the following results are obtained.

1) There was no close relationship between chino-form dosage per kg per day or total dosage or duration of its medication and maximum conduc-tion velocity (MCV) or M and H wave latencies, but MCV or the latencies of almost all the cases were delayed in the period when the drug was given, and recovered in the period when the drug was not given.

2) The form of M and H wave became polyphasic and diminished when a large quantity of chinoform was given, and clinical symptoms were severe. When a small dosage of the drug was given, the waves were almost normal, and clinical symptomswere slight.

3) Evoked EMG findings became almost stable in 6 months after the onset of SMON, and direct effects of chinoform on EMG appeared to be di-minished over 4 months after stopping the drug.

4) Evoked EMG findings and clinical symptoms of almost all the cases have improved gradually in long-term observation.
