  • Look Inside

Electromyographic (EMG) studies were per-formed on the various muscle of 35 adult dogs at shivering under hypothermia and some interesting findings were made, e.g., the oc-currence of grouping voltage in all the mu-scles.

In succession to the research on the existe-nce of spinal convulsions by SIRATORI in our clinic, I made an electromyographical study on the occurrence of shivering under hypo-thermia in 25 dogs with their spinal cord se-vered at the 7-10 th thoracic vertebra, in 10 dogs with their spinal cord destroyed be-low the 7-10 th vertebra and 10 dogs with their sciatic nerve severed, to elucidate whe-ther the shivering originated in the spinal cord. The findings are:

1. Before cooling no discharge was obser-ved in the dogs at rest, except for discharges due to spontaneous respiration and muscular work.

During shivering under hypothermia, spon-taneous discharges showing variation corre-sponding to respiration with distinct pauses or continued discharges appeared in all of the body muscles, and grouping voltages corres-ponding to the shivering were distinct in these spontaneous, respiratory and muscular work discharges.
