  • Look Inside

Chlorpromazine and Reserpine have been applied widely in psychiatric treatment for recent several years. We examined the ele-ctroencephalograms of 27 psychotics treated with those drugs acutely or chronically. We also studied the changes in electroencephalo-grams of 5 dogs given Chlorpromazine daily for 4 weeks. The results are as follows:

1. In acute administration of large doses (100mg of Chlorpromazine or 10mg of Re-serpine), the specific drowsy state is induced, and in electroencephalographic observation, some cases showed reduction of frequency of alpha waves, but most cases revealed no sig-nificant changes.

2. In electroencephalograms recorded at several times in chronic administration for a period varying from 4 to 8 weeks, we ob-served no specific findings except the same as seen in some acute cases.

3. Rapid increase or decrease of dose following the psychic states of patients in chronic treatment does not alter electroence-phalograms markedly.

4. Combination of barbiturate and Chlor-promazine or Reserpine produces higher am-plitude and retardation of alpha rhythm or unstableness of the base line if the lattar is given at the time of onset of barbiturate spindling.
