A clinical pathological study was made on the nervous disorders in the central nervous system. The material was unselected autopsied cases of the aged obtained form the Yokufukai (Asylum for the Aged).

1. Among 130 cases, 108 cases (83%) showed neurological symptoms before death, and amo-ng them 40 cases had apoplectic fits. Among these 40, 21 cases deceased within one month after the fits, while the other 19 took prolon-ged courses.

2. In the cases of apoplectic fits which died within one month after the fits, the autopsy revealed that there were 15 cases of cerebral hemorrhages, one of cerebral softenings, and that the other five showed on noticeable lesion found in the brains. It can be assumed that most of these cases of apoplectic fits with acute courses might have cerebral hemorrhage.

In the cases of cerebral apoplectic fits with prolonged courses there were 6 cases of cere-bral hemorrhages, 9 of cerebral softenings, one of other lesion and three of no lesion in the brain; these were verified by autopsy. Therefore the cerebral softening is the most common finding of the brain in this group. Most of these chronic cases had hemiplegia as the main neurological symptom.
