Abstract

In 10 cases of Buerger's disease, in which the nptients were suffering from a feeling of coldness in the affected limb, ulcer, gangrene, severe pain, etc., and one case of acrocyanosis, suffering from a feeling of coldness, edema and cyanosis of the feet, "Removal of the coccygeal body" was performed with the follo-wing results.

1) In Buerger's disease, the skin temperature after removal rose not only on the affected side but also on the healthy side, and more markedly in the more peripheral part. The disappearance of the skin temperature gradient with the increase of the peripheral temperat-ure, was seen even on the affected side. Cy-anosis and edema decreased in the case of acrocyanosis.

2) Using aphotoelectric plethysmograph Kondo and Takeuchi), a marked increase in the amplitude of the volume pulse was obser-ved after the operation.

3) No remarkable change was seen between the pre and post-operational blood pressure and pulse rate.

4) Pain decreased or disappeared immediate-ly after the removal.

5) Formation of the demarkation-line of the gangrene became more active, the persistent granulation of the ulcer improved and then wound-healing became noticeably rapid.

The follow-up results of this opration are not yet clear, and it is essential that improve-ment of the circulatory condition persist for a longer period before a true evaluation of the operation can be made. However, in our ex-perience, the favorable results of this opera-tion may continue during at least one month.

It is concluded that this operation can be very effective against relatively acute periph-eral circulatory disturbances.
