In the present study, a self-rating scale of social maladjustment for elementary and junior high school students was developed and subsequently validated based on data from 5,217 students from 4th to 9th grade. Exploratory factor analysis reproduced a presumed 4-domain structure (Peer Relationships, Family Relationships, Academics, Relationships to Teacher), which indicates that the scale has factorial validity. Correlational and multiple regression analyses revealed relations between subscale scores and external criteria (peer problem, negative parenting, academic performance, depression, aggression) that were consistent with theoretical predictions and previous findings, indicating the convergent and discriminant validity of the four subscales.
