The authors examined the relations between experience and frequency of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior and present depression among junior high school students in an entire community sample (N=2,304) in a suburban city in Japan. The prevalence rates of self-injurious behavior were 1.87% for piercing, 9.02% for hitting, and 3.95% for cutting. The prevalence rates of piercing and cutting were largely higher in girls than in boys. Present depression was, largely related to all kinds of self-injurious behavior. Furthermore, the relations between present depression, and hitting and cutting were more prominent in girls than in boys. Additionally, the frequency of self-injurious behavior was significantly associated with present depression. Last, excessive piercing, which is a form of body modification, was also significantly related to present depression.
