This study examined the relationship between delinquent behaviors (i.e. smoking, truancy, drinking, roaming at night, shoplifting, bicycle theft) and aggression and depression among a subgroup of junior high school students (n=2,334) in a community-based study sample conducted in a Japanese suburban city. Results revealed that the group of junior high school students displaying delinquent behaviors had higher aggression scores. Furthermore, with the exception of those who engaged in shoplifting, the delinquent group had higher depression scores than the non-delinquent group. Logistic regression analysis indicated that ‘physical aggression' had a significant effect on delinquent behaviors, while depression had a significant effect on delinquent behaviors except for smoking and shoplifting. In conclusion, ‘physical aggression' and depression appeared to increase the risk for delinquent behavior among junior high school students.
