An entire survey was conducted in one city to examine aggression, trait anxiety, and depression in Japanese children and adolescents. The participants in the questionnaire survey were 4,683 students (2,414 boys and 2,269 girls, grades three to eight) from all elementary and junior high schools in the city. Approximately two-fifths of the boys and two-thirds of the girls whose aggression scores were higher than the mean score+2 SD also presented with depressive symptoms above the cutoff score. A multivariate analysis indicated that aggression (hostility) and trait anxiety increased the risk of depression, especially in girls.
