  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We investigated the effect of hypnotics on cardiac function during nocturnal sleep. The subjects were 8 normal healthy males (mean age, 23.7 years). The cardiac function was evaluated by impedance cardio-graphy (ICG) and non-invasive automatic sphygmo-manometer during polysomnography (PSG). PSG was carried out after a single oral administration of placebo, brotizolam (BZL) 0.25mg, and nitrazepam (NZP) 5mg, for each subject.

Results : 1) The cardiac output (CO) during the non-REM sleep fell significantly as the degree of sleep became deeper.
