Examining circadian rhythm of arterial blood pres-sure (BP) in out-patients is not easy. Particularly measuring BP during sleep is difficult. Recently, several kinds of non-invasive ambulatory 24-hour automatic sphygmomanometer (NAAS) fitted with a cuff have been developed. However, it has not been known whether or not the disturbance of sleeping is caused by cuff-pressure applied to the upper arm for measurement of BP with them. Therefore, we studied the usefulness of measuring BP during sleep by means of a NAAS.

The subjects were seven normal males aged 25-35 years. Recording of ambulatory polygraphy (sle-eping Holter's monitoring system ; Sleep Holter) was taken in the bed of their homes from evening to morning of the following day for two nights. The first night was used as the control. During the second night, a NAAS was fitted to the subjects and a comparative study was performed to clarify the effect of the cuff-pressure applied every 30 minutes at night on the sleeping. Sleep Holter comprises inputting EEG, EOG, EMG, ventilation curves for the nose, respiratory movement curves for the thorax and ECG simultaneously into the Oxford Co. -made Medilog 9000 devised as an 8-channel Holter's EEG. NAAS used in this study was Nippon Korin Co. -made ABPM-630.

During automatic measurement of BP, only one of 7 subjects complained of interruption of sleep. However, the effect on the sleep pattern was in-significant. The results of this study suggested the usefulness of NAAS with a cuff as the non-invasive method for measuring BP during sleep.
