  • Look Inside

 Pulmonary diffusing capacity (DLco) and Krogh's Kco have been measured by singlebreath method in 37 normal children (29 boys and 8 girls) whose ages ranged from 6 to 18 years, and simultaneous determination of pulmonary capillary blood flow (Qc) has been performed in 15 normal children by an indirect Fick technique.

 The average values obtained were 23.55 ml/min/mmHg, 5.23 min-1 and 4.68l/min for DLco, Krogh's kco and Qc, respectively.

 DLco was highly correlated with weight, height, body surface area, age, lung volume and Qc. But in contrast with adult, DLco in children was found to be greater with increasing age and increased logarithmically with height and body surface area. Furthermore, Krogh's kco (DLco/VA) was no change with age. Reasons are given for suggesting that the logarithmic increase in DLco observed may be explained by a logarithmic increase in lung size such as total lung capacity with height and body surface area in children.

 In consequence of measurements, the following regression equations for DLco in children were obtained;

  DLco=antilog〔0.434(BSA)+0.782〕

  DLco=5.36(VA)+3.58

  DLco={antilog〔0.0106(age)+1.117〕} (BSA)

  DLco=6.03(Qc)-4.14
