  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Study of the source of bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract has mostly been carried out by the usual barium study, endoscopic examination or laparotomy. By these methods about 20 per cent of cases are reportedly difficult to find the bleeding source. Selective angiography has thus been introduced to improve positive results. This technique is not so often employed in this country as it should in the detection of the source of bleeding.

Selective angiography is performed by us in the following cases: gastric ulcer, gastric cancer, tumor of the small intestine, colon cancer and portal hypertension. According to the Seldinger technique a green catheter is introduced through the femoral artery into the celiac, superior mesenteric or inferior mesenteric artery, depending on the site of bleeding. The contrast medium is injected by the automatic injector under a pressure of 2~3 kg/cm2.

In a few cases macroangiogram is taken to demon-strate detailed changes of finer vascular structures in the site of hemorrhage. A fine focus tube (a focal spot of 100μ) is used and radiograms are taken in three fold magnification.
