Since 1977, the Japanese classification of colorectal carcinoma has been reported by the Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum(JSCCR). In this classification, general rules for clinical and pathological studies on cancer of the colon, rectum and anus have been decided. Macroscopic types of early colorectal cancer were described as type 0. During the last 20 years, many depressed early cancers have been reported in Japan. To define depressed type colorectal cancer, a working group in the JSCCR has been established and has discussed the re-definition of the macroscopic classification of early colorectal cancer. The details of the new criteria are described in the 7th edition of the JSCCR. In discussing the diagnosis, treatment and pathology of early colorectal cancer, we should use these new criteria.
