Purpose:This review aims to summarize trends in the articles that have appeared in the Japanese Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research over the 20 years from its inception to the present, and to discuss the future of the journal.

Methods:The review process of articles submitted to this journal, and the types and content of the articles were analyzed. The process of the development of the editorial and peer-review system was also summarized.

Results:Over the 20 years from the first issue to the present, 474 articles have been published, the majority of which were original articles. Most of the original articles were in the fields of aphasia, higher cortical dysfunction, and language development disorders, but the number of articles in the fields of dysphasia and speech disorders has been on the rise. Many of the articles focused on clinical assessment, intervention, and the scientific basis for them.

Conclusion:Over the past 20 years, the number of articles submitted to the journal has increased and the quality of the articles has been enhanced. In the future, it will be necessary to expand the methods of publishing articles, to respond to the internationalization of the journal, and to formulate policies for the use of AI technology.
