The Second Report: International exchange for nursing students and faculty members in 2002-2003: Experience of University of Washington visitation

Ⅰ.Introduction

　As reported last year, Nagoya University(NU) School of Health Sciences Department of Nursing has established a major initiative to develop high quality international exchange program for its students and faculty. The reasons are 1). Necessity of acquiring research skills in order to meet international research quality 2). Fostering international environment for students and faculty in rapid globalization of today's world. In addition to these reasons, the university began providing masters in nursing program in 2002¹⁾, and also the university is preparing a nursing doctoral program which is expected to be operational in near future. Therefore, the need for a world class international exchange program has been growing to provide high quality nursing education for students at each program level.

　In 2000, one of the international programs, NU Department of Nursing invited the dean of University of Washington(UW) School of Nursing (SON), Dr. Nancy Fugate Woods, to participate in an international seminar. As a continuing process of developing an international exchange program with UW, the department of nursing faculty members and one master's student visited UW in 2002. Through the visitation, the faculty and the student learned a great deal about UW's strong research support system, which has acquired more than $10 million as research grants for UW. This paper reports the details from experience of the UW visitation and its excellent education and research support system.
