This study was conducted to clarify factors influencing the ongoing international deployment of nurses working for Japanese Red Cross hospitals.

Qualitative descriptive research was conducted and 11 nurses who had participated in primary health care (PHC) projects in the Philippines were interviewed. Data collected from the interviews were analyzed inductively, and four core categories were identified to clarify particular factors affecting the continuation of international activities among the nurses: 1) external elements, 2) relations between nurses and external factors, 3) behavior, manners and thoughts based on preparation for deployment and practices in PHC project work, and 4) careful study.

A complex interrelation was identified among the factors analyzed. Based on the results, the following were highlighted as major influences: high motivation, career planning, a good balance of hospital work and international activities based on the establishment of better relationships with external elements (i.e., nurses' international coworkers), personal circumstances, and managers/colleagues in the originating hospital.
