新型コロナウイルス感染症のパンデミックが今後どのような軌跡をたどることになるのか，現時点で正確に予測することはできない。ただパンデミックが遷延すれば，私たちは，私たちが知る世界とは異なる世界の出現を目撃することになるかもしれない。

　それがどのような世界かは，もちろん誰にもわからない。しかしそれはもしかすると，14世紀ヨーロッパのペストのように，旧秩序（アンシャンレジーム）に変革を迫るものになる可能性さえ否定できない。そうした変化は，流行が終息したあとでさえ続く。

　感染症は社会のあり方がその様相を規定し，流行した感染症は時に社会変革の先駆けとなることがある。そうした意味で，感染症のパンデミックは社会的なものとなる。

　歴史が示す一つの教訓かもしれない。

At this point, it is impossible to predict with any accuracy the trajectory the coronavirus pandemic. However, if the pandemic spreads, we may witness the emergence of a world different from the one we know. Of course, no one knows what kind of world this will be. There is no denying the possibility that it will be like the plague in fourteenth century Europe, forcing a change in the old order （ancien régime）. Such changes will continue even after the epidemic is over. The patterns of infectious diseases are defined by the nature of society, and an epidemic of an infectious disease can sometimes be a precursor to social change. In this sense, infectious diseases pandemics are social in nature. However, there is hope. It depends on our own mindset. Unscientific attitudes do not make things better in any age. That's one lesson that history teaches us.
