There are various causes of acute kidney injury (AKI). Depending on the cause, the clinical manifestations and responses to treatment are different. In addition to a detailed history and physical examination, urine dipstick with urinalysis and an imaging study is essential to establish the cause of AKI. For the prevention and treatment of AKI, restoration of adequate intravascular volume and maintenance of perfusion pressure by vasopressors are important. Fluid overload may be associated with a higher risk of AKI and its various complications. Intra-abdominal hypertension is an under-recognized cause of AKI and morbidity in critically ill patients.
