Abstract

A strong, small, permanent magnet placed on the scalp can inhibit brain function through transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS). This static magnetic field reduces neuronal excitability by activating Cl− channels, thereby regulating cell volume. Understanding the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms and developing new devices will facilitate the clinical application of tSMS, which offers advantages over conventional noninvasive brain stimulation techniques in terms of safety, cost, and ease of use.
