  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In the past, physiologists have known that ionic currents are produced by ions which go through open channels. Recently, the new technique called "patch clamp" was developed and introduced into the field of electrophysiology. This method has enabled researchers to directly investigate activities of individual channels. Small currents, approximately pA (10-12A), have been recorded as square-pulse events, which have been attributed to the openings and the closings of the single channels in the patch membrane.
