19世紀のイギリスに近代看護婦を誕生させた社会的背景

Social Context for the Birth of Professional Nurse in the History of England

はじめに

　1860年，F. ナイチンゲールがロンドンの聖トーマス病院に看護学校（The Nightingale Training School, St. Thomas' Hospital）を創立して，近代看護婦養成が始まった。それまでにもすでに看護婦は存在したし，多少の訓練が行なわれていたのであるが，ナイチンゲールの始めた看護婦養成はまったく新しいものであった。その新しさとは，看護は訓練を必要とする職業であると規定し，大規模な看護婦養成施設を作って組織的に訓練を行なったことにある。Cook（1913，pp. 439-442）は，この点こそが彼女を近代看護創始者と呼ぶにふさわしい理由であると述べている。ここに新しい考え方にたち組織的な訓練を受けた近代看護婦が誕生する。

　近代看護婦の誕生は，それまで家事労働の1つであると考えられ，主に主婦が担ってきた看護が，職業として成り立つようになったことを示している。そのような大きな転換が生じたのは，直接的にはナイチンゲールが導いたのであるが，間接的にそれを支え，近代看護婦を誕生させるに至った動因があると考えられる。しかしながら，この疑問を明らかにする研究は寡聞にして見当たらない。そこで，人口動態を含む当時のイギリスの社会状況のあり方を示す資料によって，近代看護婦が19世紀のイギリスに誕生したわけを探ることが本論のねらいである。

　The purpose of this study was to describe the social context for the birth of professional nurse. Florence Nightingale founded new system for professional nurses at the Nightingale Training School for Nurses, established at St. Thomas' Hospital, London, in 1860. Indeed she was the founder of the nursing profession, but in England there were some signs of requiring to reform of nursing. They were as follows. The progress of modern medicine has brought about great changes to physician and nurses. The pollution of the environment by industrialization, overpopulation by urban growth and great number of the war dead have became an object of public concern. On the other hand, the birth rate was on the decrease, and the education spread over various classes. Women started to get social and economical independent.
