The purpose of this research was to investigate childrens experienceswith congenital heart disease using Leininger's mini-ethnonursing method. Six children were selected as the key informant from a cardiac ward in the Kanto area in Japan who were 10 to 14 years old and had congenital heart disease. Twelve general informants were selected with 3 physicians, 3 nurses, and 6 parents of the children. Data were collected using the Leininger's Observation-Participation-Reflection Enablers and with interviews. From the data analysis, five themes were discovered. Theme 1: Children worried about their friends and their younger siblings because of their disease, but did not tell their friends of their worries.

Theme 2: Children thought their disease as a part of their personality but recognized that it was impossible as they related to friends and thought about Why, me?

Theme 3: Hospitalization physically distances the children from their friends, even though the unit staff try to facilitate their feelingsand care need.

Theme 4: The children accepted the cardiac surgery as they were eager to be active and do things with their friends in the same ways.

Theme 5: As younger siblings become bigger and stronger, which frighten the position of older seniority siblings.

Main Theme: Children with congenital heart disease do the best they can for themselves while hospitalized.
