I．緒言

　本邦において，悪性腫瘍は死因の大きな割合を占め，将来にわたり癌患者はさらに増加するという推測がなされている現状で，各分野から癌に対する研究が精力的に行われている。外科的治療の面からは，再建術の進歩などにより治療成績も向上しているが，放射線治療も遠隔成績を良くするうえで大きく貢献している。

　また近年，担癌患者の非特異的細胞性免疫のパラメーターとして，末梢血Tリンパ球，phytohemagglutinin，concanavalin Aなどによる末梢血リンパ球幼若化反応，各種遅延型皮膚反応などが，各施設で一般的検査項目となってきたが，我我の知る限りでは，頭頸部領域では個々の症例において長期観察した報告は，まだ少ないようである。

　Peripheral lympocytes and their subpopulations were investigated in 82 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck after irradiation. None of the patients were previously treated. Peripheral lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes recovered to pretreatment levels within two years after irradiation. However, B-lymphocytes remained below the pretreatment level even after a period of three years. These results suggest that the immunological status of the host plays an important role in the treatment of carcinoma of the head and neck.
