On 31 non-cancer patients, the lymphocyte population in the peripheral blood was measured before and after surgery. The lymphocyte population was examined by E (T cell) and EAC (B cell) rosette forming test.

The number of T cells decreased temporarily a day after operation and then increased. In the cases received surgery under local anesthesia, the number of T cells recovered in 3 to 8 days after operation and in the cases under general anesthesia they recovered in 12 to 20 days after operation.

The cause of this temporary depression of the number of T cells was still uncertain, but it might be due to emotional stress.

For cancer treatment, it seemed to be important that the number of T cell decreased by surgery.
