　Ⅰ．緒言

　医学の進歩により日本人の平均年齢が延長し，わが国の老人人口が急増を始めた。それに反し，わが国の社会福祉の顕著な立ち遅れが多くの複雑な老人問題^1）を提起している。これを加速するものに核家族化の現象などがある。

　一般に老人とは何歳からをいうのであろうか。個体差が大きいので医学的にも確定はされていないが，社会通念上は65歳以上とされている。国民年金法による老齢年金は65歳より支給される。

　With the greater increase of life expectancy in recent years the incidence of laryngeal cancer among the aged has also become greater. The author reports 187 cases of laryngeal cancer among persons aged 70 years cr more. In treatment of these cases, the paucity of risk is emphasized by findings of other geriatric affections. It is also important to pay a due attention to the psychological attitude of the elderly patients.

　Total laryngectomy preceded with a tracheotomy is much more preferable than the operation with extended partial laryngectomy. The five-year survival rate was 57%.
