Anatomical aspects of neuromuscular junction

　1個の運動神経細胞とそれにより支配される筋線維群を一つの機能的単位と考え，運動単位（motor unit）と呼ぶ。一つの運動単位に属する筋線維の数は筋の種類によって異なる。たとえば，精細な動きのできる外眼筋ではその数は1ないし数個であるが，粗大な運動を行なう体幹や四肢の筋では数百個にも及ぶ。各運動単位の筋線維はすべて同一の生理的および形態的特性を有するが，たがいに筋内で分散して存在する。

　筋に達した運動神経線維は分枝して，それぞれは異なる筋線維表面に終る。ここに特殊な接触構造，すなわち神経筋接合（neuromuscular junction）をつくる。神経線維の分枝の状況や接合部の分布は銀染色法により，非常によく調べられてきた。しかし，銀染色法は神経終末部の細胞境界を染め出すことができず，筋との接触形態の詳細は明らかにされなかった。比較的近年になって，生体染色法およびcholinesterase組織化学法が開発され，接合部の形態，とくに筋線維側の表面分化が観察できるようになり，この分野に一つの飛躍をもたらした。その後，電子顕微鏡の導入により，接合部の微細構造が確立されてきたことは周知のことである。しかしながら，形態学的アプローチとして，電子顕微鏡に加えて，銀染色法や組織化学法が現在なお重要な研究手段であることに変わりはない。神経筋接合に関しては，Couteaux^7），Coërs^6），Zacks^24）の詳細な総説がある。

The fine structure of neuromuscular junctions in vertebrates was described with special reference to the dynamic aspects of chemical transmission. Our observations on the endplate in mouse diaphragm confirmed the general description so far presented. Furthermore, it was shown that a nerve fiber lost its myelin just before the terminal arborization, where the perineurial sheath also ended. Leaving the sheath open, the perineurial epithelial cells were still seen beyond this point, but freely scattered.
