  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We observed peripapillary staphyloma in a 3-month-old female infant and two 3-year-old boys. In the first case, the right optic disc had mild excavation with peripapillary chorioretinal atrophy. The left eye was microphthalmic and had persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous behind the lens. The second case showed a deep, cup-shaped excavation surrounding the disc in the left eye. The margin of staphyloma showed chorioretinal atrophy. The fovea was involved in the excavation resulting in marked reduction in visual acuity. The fellow eye was intact. The third case showed microphthalmos in the right eye. Total retinal detachment was present. Computed tomography showed deep scleral extasia in the peripapillary area. Elongated ciliary processes were attached to the posterior lens capsule. A vitreous strand extended from the disc to the ciliary process.
