  • Look Inside

This study was designed to evaluate visual out-come after vitrectomy for young diabetics and toassess the effect of systemic factors on postoper-ative visual outcome. Pars plana vitrectomy wasperformed on 34 eyes of 26 diabetic patients whowere 39 years of age or younger. Twenty-onepatients (81%) had poor serum glucose level, eigh-teen (69%) had diabetic nephropathy and ten(38%) had systemic hypertension. The postoper-ative results in the IDDM patients tended to bebetter than in the NIDDM patients. Moderate orsevere diabetic nephropathy, hemodialysis treat-ment (before or after surgery) and systemic hyper-tension correlated closely with poor visual out-come. Diabetic neuropathy, anemia, or poor serumglucose level did not present significant risks ofpoor visual outcome.
