糖尿病性網膜症（DR）の本態が血管性病変（DRA）であるという立場から，螢光眼底撮影（FAG）所見を堰にDRを分類し，かつ固有血管からの色素漏出所見を参考に，活動期と非活動期に二分した所，両期においては，病態進行上明らかな差異を認めた。さらに活動期と非活動期に二分することは，光凝固の適応時期選択上，あるいは，効果の判定上有用であった。しかも各病型間の相互関係が簡潔に表わされるため，病態の進行を容易に把握することができた。
以上の理由から，FAG所見を基壁にした新分類を提案した。
A new classification of diabetic retinopathy with the use of fluorescein angiography is presented. Diabetic retinopathy was divided into seven types on following criteria.
type 1. Retinopathy having microaneurysmal changes only.
type 2. Retinopathy having avascular areas.
type 3. Retinopathy with micro and/or small vessel changes associated with or without the changes of type 2.
type 4. Retinopathy having neovascularization only in the areas outside 1 DD from the disc
type 5. Retinopathy having neovascularization within 1 DD from the disc as well.
type 6. Retinopathy having retinal detachment.
