  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Measurements of sensory conduction velocity of aural nerves were carried out by using a computer technic (Nihon Koden ATAC 402) in 30 normal sub-jects, and then the relation between clinical picture, sensory conduction velocity and biopsy findings of the aural nerves were investigated in ten patients with various peripheral neuropathies.

The mean value of sensory conduction velocities of sural nerves in 30 normal persons was 54 m/sec, and its standard deviation was 3.3m/sec.

In all of 4 cases who showed an impairment of sensation in all modalities of the legs, the definite decrease of conduction velocities and the degeneration of myelines and axis cylinders were found and the spectrum showed that the demyelination of the larger fibers were more prominent than that of the smaller ones.

In 3 cases with slightly reduced superficial sen-sation of the legs, but with no abnormalities in nerve biopsy nor in spectrum of the myeline diameter, one showed a reduction of conduction velocity.

Among 3 patients with motor type neuropathy, who showed no abnormality on the biopsy of the sural nerves, two showed mildly decreased conduction velocity of the nerve. Subsequently, one of the above two manifested impaired superficial sensation.
